Culture, community and football came together in spectacular fashion when Koongamia Football Club hosted its annual NAIDOC Community Day on Saturday, 4 July 2026, bringing hundreds of people together to celebrate this year's NAIDOC Week theme, "50 Years of Deadly."
The theme marks a significant milestone for NAIDOC Week, celebrating five decades of recognising and honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements, while paying tribute to the Elders, organisers and communities who have sustained and strengthened the movement over the past 50 years.
The event brought together Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal families, players, volunteers, Elders, children, community organisations and football clubs in a vibrant celebration of culture, connection and community spirit.
Proceedings began with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, setting the tone for a meaningful and respectful day of celebration. Attendees were then treated to cultural dance performances by local children who had spent several weeks learning traditional dances under the guidance of Kashayla Austin and Josh Kelly. Their performances showcased not only their talent, but also the pride, confidence and cultural connection that NAIDOC Week seeks to celebrate.
While football remained at the heart of the day, the event offered much more than the matches played on the field. Visitors enjoyed a wide range of cultural and community activities, including a community sand mural, children's activities, market stalls, raffles, a coffee van and the club's popular annual cake stall. Traditional kangaroo stew and damper were also shared, providing an opportunity for people to experience and celebrate Aboriginal culture together.
The action began with Koongamia's women's side, which competes in the PFL, producing a dominant performance to defeat Wembley 156-8. The evening concluded with a thrilling twilight clash with Koongamia securing a memorable, hard fought one-point victory over tough opponents Innaloo, 89-88, in front of a strong community crowd.
The welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere reflected both the spirit of NAIDOC Week and the values that Koongamia Football Club continues to champion within its community. Throughout the day, people of all ages came together to celebrate culture, strengthen relationships and create lasting memories.
The success of the event was made possible through the dedication and hard work of the club's committee, volunteers, cultural leaders, sponsors, umpires and community members. Their collective efforts ensured the day ran smoothly and created an experience that will be remembered by many for years to come.
